Job # 5 – Compare & Contrast

Compare & contrast the short stories and writing styles of Washington Irving and Ambrose Bierce.  Things to consider (but don’t feel limited by these thoughts!) 

 

1.Think about the 2 Literary Periods represented - Irving’s Romantic/Gothic genre, & Bierce’s use of Realism.  In what way do these periods affect the writing style of the authors & content of their stories?

2. What are the important or noteworthy features of each story?  Is it the use of characters, or setting or plot or some other literary feature? 
3.    Do the stories have anything in common? Events, plot, lessons, themes, ideas?  If not, how are the stories different?
4.    Do you think one story is superior to the other? Explain your answer.
